A guide to giving music

How to gift a song they'll keep for good

A song gift has three parts: the song, the moment and a few lines that say why. Here's how to give someone a song five different ways, plus when to give it, how to wrap it and what to write.

  • 5 ways, compared
  • 7 moments to give it
  • Lines to copy

1 · The way

Five ways to gift a song

The first four use a song that already exists; the fifth is a brand-new song written about that person. None of them wins on everything: it depends on how much time you have and what you want them to keep.

With a song that already exists

  • 1. A playlist that tells your story

Ten or twelve songs in the order things happened between you, from the first one you heard together to the one you play now.

    How to do it

    1. Jot down the milestones: how you met, a road trip, a move, a rough patch you got through.
    2. Pick one song for each and put them in date order, not in order of favorites.
    3. Give it a name only the two of you would get, and use the description to say why each song is there.

Best if you've been together for years and have songs you both love.

  • 2. Play it at exactly the right moment

One song, chosen with care, that comes on right when it should.

    How to do it

    1. Choose a song that means something to both of you, not just to you.
    2. Set the scene: speaker charged, volume tested, the song already queued up.
    3. Hit play without announcing it and let the song talk before you do.

Best for a dinner, a long drive or a birthday at midnight.

  • 3. Dedicate it out loud

Request it at a party, from the band at a bar or at karaoke night, with their name and in front of everyone.

    How to do it

    1. Talk to the DJ or the band ahead of time: which song, when, and how to say their name.
    2. Have a short line ready for right before it starts; three sentences is plenty.
    3. While it plays, look at them, not at the crowd.

Best for people who love being the center of attention.

  • 4. A song with a card that says why

The song as a link or a scannable code, plus a handwritten card that explains why you chose it.

    How to do it

    1. Pick the song and copy the link, or make a code they can scan.
    2. Write down which moment it brings back and which line makes you think of them.
    3. Hand it over with something they can hold: a book, a flower, a pair of concert tickets.

Best if saying things out loud isn't your strong suit.

With a song that doesn't exist yet

5. A song written about them

A new song with their name, their nicknames and the memories you share with us, one that doesn't play anywhere else.

How to do it

  1. Tell the story: their name, what they mean to you, the occasion and three specific memories.
  2. Listen to two full versions and change the lyrics, style or mood if something feels off.
  3. Give it as a private gift page with photos and your message, or as an MP3 and a lyric video.

Best when no existing song says what you want to say.

2 · The comparison

Which way fits your gift best?

Four questions for each way, measured like on a cutting mat. Use them as a rough guide: what matters most is how well you know this person.

What if the song doesn't exist?

A song that's theirs alone

When no song says what you mean, we write one about them: with their name, their nicknames and the memories you tell us.

Make their song

AI writes the lyrics from what you tell us and produces the music, and the vocals are synthetic voices. No real singer or artist performs on, takes part in or endorses your song.

  1. Tell us the storyTheir name, what they mean to you, the occasion and three specific memories.
  2. Hear two versionsThe lyrics arrive in about a minute; both full songs follow a minute or two later.
  3. Pay only if you love itBefore you pay, you can change the lyrics, style or mood, with a limited number of rounds.

3 · The moment

Seven moments to give someone a song

The same song lands differently at midnight than during a toast. For each occasion: how to give it and what to watch for.

  • At midnight on their birthday

Make it the first thing they hear that day: send it at 12:00 AM sharp with a line of your own. If it's a personalized song, the gift email can be scheduled for that exact time.

Heads-up If they go to bed early, save it for breakfast, with the coffee.

  • At your anniversary dinner

Bring it on your phone with a small speaker, or ask the restaurant to play it with dessert. Before it starts, say in one sentence why this song.

Heads-up In a busy restaurant, sharing a pair of earbuds works better than turning it up.

  • At a wedding

For the entrance, the first dance or the toasts. Send the file to the DJ a few days ahead and agree on the exact minute.

Heads-up If it's a surprise for the couple, at least the planner should know.

  • At a graduation

Behind the slideshow at the grad party, or on the drive home after commencement. Let it be about the work it took, not just the celebration.

Heads-up Arenas and gyms are loud; save it for dinner with the family.

  • When they live far away

Get on a video call and hit play at the same time, each on your own phone, on the count of three. Watching their face while they listen beats any text.

Heads-up Audio shared over a video call tends to stutter; it's better if you each have the link.

  • After an apology

The song doesn't replace the conversation; it comes after it. Talk first, then give them a song that says what's hard for you to say.

Heads-up No group chats, no audience: this stays between the two of you.

  • At a farewell or a tribute

For a funeral, a celebration of life or the anniversary of their passing, choose something calm and check with the family first. A song with their name can be played that day or kept by the person who misses them most.

Heads-up No surprises here: everything gets talked through ahead of time.

4 · The wrapping

How to present a song as a gift

You can't see a song. That's why it helps to give it a shape: something to open, scan, hang on the wall or watch together.

  • A link that opens like a gift

Don't send the link on its own: write a line first. With a personalized song, the gift page opens on their phone with your photos and your message before the music starts.

  • A card with a QR code

Print the code on a card, or tuck it inside a book or a box. They scan it with their phone camera and the song opens.

  • The lyrics, printed and framed

If the song is theirs, the lyrics come as a PDF: print them on heavy paper and frame them. If it's a well-known song, handwrite just the line that matters to you.

  • Have it play at the party

Give the file to whoever is running the music and agree on the exact minute. Ask them to dim the lights first: those two seconds of quiet are part of the gift too.

  • A video with photos

Pull together ten photos of the two of you and put the song behind them. A personalized song already comes with a vertical lyric video, ready to text.

5 · The words

What to write when you gift a song

What people remember isn't the song, it's the why. A three-line formula and six examples to copy or adapt.

The formula

  1. I picked this song because…
  2. When it plays, I think of…
  3. Listen to it when…

Fill them in with something only the two of you know. If you only get two lines down, that's enough.

  • For your partner

I picked this one because it was on the radio the night we got lost looking for the lake house. Every time it plays, I'm back in that car, map upside down, you laughing.

  • For your mom

You used to sing this to get me to sleep, and I'd pretend I was out so you'd keep going. Now it's your turn to listen.

  • For a friend

Ten years of friendship in three and a half minutes. Turn it up and remember that summer we were broke and had everything.

  • For your dad

I'm not great at saying this stuff, so I'm letting a song say it. Thanks for every time you came to get me, no questions asked.

  • Long distance

We're 2,000 miles and two time zones apart. Let's hit play at the same time: for three minutes, we're in the same room.

  • In their memory

This song has his name in it. It's so that when you miss him, you have somewhere to go and find him.

6 · What to avoid

Five common mistakes when you gift a song

None of them ruins the gift, but each one takes something away. And every one is easy to fix.

  1. Mistake

    Picking the song you like

    Better

Think about what they listen to and what you've been through together. Torn between two? Go with the one tied to a shared memory.

  2. Mistake

Not saying why you chose it

    Better

Without a line, it's just a song; with two sentences, it's a gift. Use the formula above.

  3. Mistake

Playing it in public when it's private

    Better

A song about making up or about a loss doesn't belong at a party. Give it to them one-on-one and let them decide whether to share it.

  4. Mistake

    Leaving the tech for last

    Better

Test the speaker, the volume and the link beforehand. Keep the file downloaded in case there's no signal.

  5. Mistake

    Telling a generic story

    Better

If you order a personalized song, details make the lyrics: “you always support me” is nothing like “you drove me to the airport at 5 a.m.”

Questions

Questions about gifting a song

What people ask us most before they gift a song.

How do I give someone a song by text or chat?

Send the link with a line or two about why you chose it; a bare link feels cold. With a personalized song, you can send the gift page link or the vertical lyric video, which usually plays right in the conversation.

What song should I gift if I can't decide?

Start from memories, not from the charts: the one from a road trip, a wedding, or the car rides with their family. If you're stuck between two, choose the one with a shared story. And if none fits, you can ask for one about the two of you.

Can I gift a song with their name in it?

Yes. You tell us their name, what they mean to you, the occasion and a few memories; AI writes the lyrics and produces the music, with synthetic voices. You hear two full versions before you pay.

How long does a personalized song take?

The lyrics are ready in about a minute, and both full versions a minute or two after that. We can't guarantee an exact song length: every set of lyrics finds its own.

Can I schedule it to arrive at an exact time?

Yes: the gift email can be scheduled for the day and time you choose, like midnight on their birthday. You can also send the link, the MP3 and the video yourself whenever you want.

How do I gift a song to someone who lives far away?

Send the link and set up a video call to listen together, each on your own phone. A personalized gift page opens from any country, and the gift email can be scheduled for whatever time works in their time zone.

Can the song be in a language other than English?

Yes. It can be in English, Spanish, Portuguese or Italian, in styles like pop, country, R&B or ballad. The sample on this page is sung in English.

What if I don't like how it turned out?

Before you pay, you can change the lyrics, style or mood and regenerate it, with a limited number of rounds; if it doesn't win you over, you don't pay. Once paid, the song can't be changed and, in general, there are no refunds.
