How to send a song via text message so it plays the moment they tap

The short version: send a link when you can and a file when you must. Below are the taps that work on iPhone, Android and chat apps, plus when to hit send and what to write.

Step 1

First, decide what you're sending

Before working out how to send a song in a text message, pick the format. A song can travel four ways, and the right one depends on what's on their phone and what you want them to see.

  • A streaming link

A link to the song on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube or another service.

    Why it works

    • Tiny, so it sends instantly from any phone
    • Plays at full quality in their music app

    Watch out

    • Full playback may need that app or an account
    • Only works for songs that are already released

Best forA song you both love that's already out there

  • An audio file

An MP3, or a voice memo you recorded, attached to the message.

    Why it works

    • Plays without any music app or account
    • Theirs to keep, even offline

    Watch out

    • Over plain text messaging, big files may be shrunk or refused
    • Just sound: no words, no photos

Best forYour own recording, or a song file that's yours to share

  • A vertical video

A 9:16 clip, like a lyric video, that plays right in the conversation.

    Why it works

    • They read the words while they listen
    • Easy to replay and pass on

    Watch out

    • Video gets squeezed the hardest, so it can look soft
    • The heaviest of the four to send

Best forSomeone who likes to watch as well as listen

  • A gift page link

A private page with the song, the lyrics, your photos and a note.

    Why it works

    • Opens in the browser on iPhone and Android alike
    • Words, photos and your note arrive together

    Watch out

    • Needs a page made for it, like the one that comes with every song we make
    • Anyone with the link can open it, so send it only to them

Best forA song written for them, sent as a gift

Not sure what phone or apps they have? Pick something that opens in a browser.

Step 2

Step by step on iPhone, Android and chat apps

Button names shift between phones and app updates, so these are the moves that stay the same: how to send song via text on any phone, in three short routes.

  1. iPhone

    Messages app

Send a link from a music app

    1. Open the song in your music app.
    2. Find Share. It's usually in the song's menu.
    3. Pick Messages, choose the person, add a line and send. Or copy the link and paste it into any conversation.

Send an audio file or voice memo

    1. Find the file in the Files app, or open the recording in Voice Memos.
    2. Tap Share and pick Messages.
    3. Add a line and send. It arrives as an audio clip they can play right in the conversation.

    Good to know

    • From one iPhone to another, links and files usually arrive just as you sent them.
    • Texting someone who isn't on an iPhone? The message may go as a regular text instead, where big files can be shrunk or fail to send. A link avoids both.
  2. Android

    Your messaging app

Send a link from a music app

    1. Open the song in your music app.
    2. Tap Share. It's usually in the song's menu.
    3. Pick your messaging app, choose the person and send. Copy link works too: paste it into any chat.

Attach an audio file or a video

    1. Open your messaging app and start a conversation with them.
    2. Tap the + or paperclip button to attach something.
    3. Choose the file, video or recording, add a line and send.

    Good to know

    • Android phones come from many makers, so menus differ a little. Look for Share, Attach or a + button.
    • When chat features are on for both of you, files usually go through at better quality. As a plain picture or video message, they may be shrunk or refused.
  3. WhatsApp and other chat apps

    Telegram, Messenger, Signal…

    Share a link

    1. In your music app, tap Share and pick the chat app.
    2. Choose the person or the group.
    3. Add a line and send. Most chat apps show a little preview card for the link.

    Send the file itself

    1. In the chat, tap the attach button.
    2. Pick the option for documents or files rather than photos and videos, to keep the original quality.
    3. Choose the MP3 or MP4 and send.

    Good to know

    • You both need the same app. It uses mobile data or Wi-Fi, not your text plan.
    • Sent as a photo or video, a clip is usually compressed. Sent as a document, it usually isn't.

What they see

One tap on the link, and the song starts singing their name

This is the gift page that comes with every song we make: their name, your photo and the lyrics lighting up as it plays. It opens in the browser, so it works the same on iPhone and Android.

What you can send

  • A private gift linkPaste it into any text or chat. There's a QR code too.
  • A vertical lyric videoMP4 in 9:16, with your photos and the words
  • The song as an MP3The full song, no watermark

Step 3

Send it at the right moment

A song lands best when they can actually listen. A minute of planning beats sending it the second it's ready.

  • Schedule it, if your phone can

Some phones and messaging apps let you pick a send time, often by pressing and holding the send button or from the message menu. Not all of them do. If yours doesn't, write the message now and set a reminder.

  • Check their time zone

Midnight for you can be breakfast for them. Aim for a moment when they'll have a quiet minute with the sound on.

  • Skip the busy hours

Right before a meeting, on a commute without headphones, in the middle of the party: they'll glance at it and save it for later. Morning coffee or a slow evening works better.

  • Or let the gift email do the timing

With a song from us, you can schedule the gift email for the date you choose, then text them the same link so it's waiting in both places.

Before you hit send

  • Open the link on your own phone once and press play
  • Add a line so it doesn't look like spam
  • Suggest headphones, or at least the sound on
  • Check it's going to the right person

Step 4

What to write with it

A bare link can look like spam. One line tells them why it's worth three minutes. Borrow one of these and make it yours.

  • Birthday
Happy birthday. I couldn't wrap this one, so press play instead.
  • Anniversary
Every year with you deserves a soundtrack. Here's this year's.
  • Just because
No reason at all. This made me think of you, so now it's yours.
  • Far away
I can't be there today, so I sent a song in my place. Sound on.
  • Thank you
I never said it properly, so I asked a song to say it for me.
  • Hard day
No need to reply. Put this on and breathe for three minutes.
  • Their own song
Headphones on. Listen for your name in the chorus.

Questions

Sending a song by text: what people ask

Short answers to the questions that come up most. Anything else, just email us.

Should I send a link or the actual file?

A link, in most cases. It's tiny, arrives instantly and doesn't get compressed. Send a file when they need it offline or when there's no link to share, such as your own recording.

How do you send a song in a text if they don't have Spotify or Apple Music?

Streaming links often open a web page, but full playback may need that app or an account. A file, or a gift page that plays in the browser, works without any music app.

Why did the video look blurry after I texted it?

Plain picture and video messages have size limits, so your phone or carrier may shrink a video before it goes out. Send a link instead, or use a chat app's file or document option, which usually keeps the original.

Can I schedule a text to send later?

On some phones and in some messaging apps, yes; others don't offer it. If yours doesn't, set a reminder. With a song from us, the gift email can be scheduled for a date you pick, and you can text the same link whenever you like.

Can I send the song to a group chat?

Yes, a link works in any group chat. Keep in mind that anyone who has a gift page link can open it, so share it only with the people it's meant for. You can replace the link or turn it off at any time.

Is it different sending from an iPhone to an Android phone?

Your steps are the same. What changes is the route: between different kinds of phones, a message may go as a regular text, where big files are more likely to be shrunk or refused. Links aren't affected.

Does a gift page link expire?

Your gift page and files are available after you pay, and the link keeps working unless you replace it or turn it off. Download links are short-lived on purpose; if one stops working, ask for a fresh one through Find your song. The gift video stays available for 30 days after it's made and you can make it again. We don't promise to store files forever, so keep your own copy.

Can they save the song to their phone?

If you allow downloads, they can save the MP3 and the video from the gift page. You can also switch that off so they can only listen.
