The party playlist

Thirty 18th birthday songs, one group per party moment

Each group fits a moment of the night, from the toast to the last dance. Most of them also work as songs to dedicate to your children on any birthday, not just the big one-eight.

  1. Turning 18: the toast

When: When the sparkling cider gets poured (they're 18, not 21) and someone has to say a few words. Songs about growing up and the road that starts now.

    2. Coming of Age · Foster the People
    3. On Top of the World · Imagine Dragons
    4. Don't Blink · Kenny Chesney
    5. Wide Open Spaces · The Chicks

    1. Happy Birthday · Stevie Wonder
    2. Good Time · Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen
    3. Party in the U.S.A. · Miley Cyrus
    4. Firework · Katy Perry
    5. Dynamite · Taio Cruz
  3. In Mom's voice

When: For the slideshow, or for the note Mom can't read out loud without tearing up halfway through.

    1. Wings · Little Mix
    2. Hold On · Wilson Phillips
    3. Keep Holding On · Avril Lavigne
    4. Who Says · Selena Gomez & the Scene
    5. Sunshine on My Shoulders · John Denver
  4. In Dad's voice

When: For the dad who isn't a speech guy but can let a song do the talking: advice, pride and a little where-did-the-time-go.

    1. Let Them Be Little · Billy Dean
    2. Letter to Me · Brad Paisley
    3. Something to Be Proud Of · Montgomery Gentry
    4. Then They Do · Trace Adkins
    5. Father to Son · Queen
  5. For all your kids at once

When: When there are two, three or more of them and the shout-out is for everybody. Great under a family slideshow.

    1. The Family Madrigal · Stephanie Beatriz & Olga Merediz
    2. These Are Days · 10,000 Maniacs
    3. Good Old Days · Macklemore & Kesha
    4. Daydream Believer · The Monkees
    5. We're Going to Be Friends · The White Stripes
  6. When the dance floor opens

When: After the cake, to get friends, grandparents and cousins moving. The ones that work in a backyard or a rented hall.

    1. Cupid Shuffle · Cupid
    2. Cha Cha Slide · DJ Casper
    3. Levitating · Dua Lipa
    4. Party Rock Anthem · LMFAO
    5. Old Town Road · Lil Nas X

One candle is still missing

These thirty are about somebody else's kids. Number thirty-one can be about yours: their name, the nickname from when they were little, the story the family tells at every birthday.

At the 18th birthday party

When to play the song, moment by moment

Backyard, pizza place or rented hall, most 18th birthday parties have the same six moments. Here's where a song made just for them lands best.

Corner of a backyard party table in the evening: a cream cake with cherries and lit candles, confetti, two glasses of something bubbly and a small gold key on a linen napkin (AI photo)
A little gold key: some families hand one over right after the cake.
  1. 01 · On arrival

The guest of honor walks in

Something upbeat while they come in and everyone cheers. One chorus is plenty, then it's time to eat.

  2. 02 · After dinner

    The slideshow

Photos from the crib to senior year, in order, under a single song. Try to keep it under four minutes.

  3. 03 · The candlesThe right moment

    Cutting the cake

Lights off, the cake comes out and the whole room sings. While the photos get taken, their song starts.

  4. 04 · The toast

A few words from the parents

Read your card line, raise a glass of sparkling cider and let the music say the rest. Nobody needs a long speech.

  5. 05 · The giftThe right moment

    Handing over the keys

Car keys, a house key of their own or a key necklace: hand it over on the chorus. Tuck the gift page QR code into the box too.

  6. 06 · Dance time

    The dance floor opens

Now it's their friends' turn. And at the end of the night, by popular demand, their song one more time.

The slideshow or the photo wall

  • One photo for every birthday

From the first candle to the eighteenth: eighteen photos, one a year, play on their own in three or four minutes.

  • The lyrics on screen

The song comes with a vertical lyric video: put it up on the TV as it is or cut it together with your own photos.

  • The wall next to the cake

Print a photo from every birthday and hang them in a row. In the middle, the QR code that opens the gift page.

The card

What to write in the card, birthday by birthday

One line for the card, the gift message or the toast. We wrote these as examples: borrow them and swap in your own details.

  • One year of 3 a.m. feedings and made-up lullabies, and we'd sign up for every single one again.
Mom and Dad · 1 year
  • Double digits! Stay this curious forever. And maybe stop slipping your broccoli to the dog.
    Dad · 10 years
  • Here's your own key to the house. You've had the key to our hearts for eighteen years, and that one's yours to keep.
Mom and Dad · 18 years
  • I'm not going to say be careful. Just text me when you get there, and have the time of your life.
    Mom · 18 years
  • Thirty, a mortgage and a dog of your own. And I still save you the corner piece of the cake.
    Mom · 30 years
  • Three kids, three playlists blasting from three bedrooms, and not one minute we'd trade. This one's for all of you.
Mom and Dad · 3 kids

Three rules for a card that lands

  1. Short gets read, long gets skipped

Two lines at most, short enough to say without notes. The song says the rest.

  2. One detail only your family knows

The nickname, the stuffed animal, the word they got wrong at three: one is enough for the whole room to get it.

  3. Talk about today too

Not just the baby stories: tell them what you love about the person they've become.

What a birthday song made here sounds like

Celebrate You, Maya was made for a 30th: listen for the spot where her name gets sung. Ordinary Days shows how small details turn into verses.

From parents

Birthdays that came with one extra song

  • A young man who just turned 18 listens to a song on his phone with one earbud at a long table in a pizza place, while his dad keeps an arm around his shoulders and watches him (AI photo, fictional people)
    His 18th
Party at our favorite pizza place, thirty people. We played it for him right before the cake: one earbud in, and for two minutes he didn't look up. Then he hugged me in front of everybody.
    Tony R.Philadelphia, PA
  • Her first birthday
We made it for her first birthday, but honestly it was for us: a year of sleepless nights, set to music. We're saving it to play again at her 18th.
    Ashley T.Boise, ID
  • A woman in her thirties hugs her mom from behind in a small kitchen, both laughing with their eyes closed; on the counter, a tiramisu with one lit candle (AI photo, fictional people)
    Her 30th
My daughter was turning thirty and kept saying she didn't want anything. The song had her grandma's tiramisu and the dented Civic she drove at sixteen. She laughed and cried at the same time.
    Linda M.Pittsburgh, PA
  • His 18th
I'm not a speech guy. At the toast I said “everybody listen” and hit play. By the second verse even his buddies were wiping their eyes.
    Dave D.Omaha, NE
  • Three adult siblings squeezed onto an old floral couch listen to a phone and laugh, while their mom leans over the back of the couch with her arms around them (AI photo, fictional people)
    For all three
One song for three kids sounded impossible: a verse each and the chorus for everybody. Now they argue over who got the best verse.
    Lisa B.Charlotte, NC
  • His 10th
For his tenth we put in Little League, the hamster and the grandma who calls him “buddy boy.” He knew it by heart in two days.
    Jason F.Tulsa, OK
  • A young woman who just turned 18 holds up a small gold key she has just taken out of a little box, thrilled, while her mom beside her covers her mouth with both hands (AI photo, fictional people)
    A key for her 18th
We gave her a gold key to our front door right on the chorus. Under it in the box was the gift page QR code: she played the song three times before going back to dance.
    Rachel S.Denver, CO
  • Birthday away at college
Our son is at school in Boston and spent his birthday away from us. We scheduled the gift email for midnight his time. He called us at 12:03.

Questions

What parents ask before the party

The ones we usually get the week of an 18th.

The 18th birthday party is in a few days. Is there still time?

Yes. The lyrics arrive in about a minute and the two full versions a minute or two later. As soon as you pay you can download everything, and you can schedule the gift email for the day of the party.

Is there an “18th birthday” occasion on the form?

No: pick Birthday and write in the story that they're turning eighteen, what it means to your family and what you want to wish them. The lyrics will start from there.

Can I dedicate one song to all my kids?

Yes. Write everyone's name in the story and one detail for each: the song can give each kid a verse and keep the chorus for all of them. For the relationship, choose Child.

Can we use the nickname they had as a little kid?

Of course, and it's often the part that gets everyone laughing. Write the nickname and where it came from: the lyrics will use it next to their real name.

Can we play it at the party with the slideshow?

Yes. You get an MP3 and a vertical lyric video (MP4). After you pay, the rights we hold in the song pass to you, so you can use it in the party video, on social media or anywhere you like.

Can Mom and Dad sign it together?

Yes. Write in the story who it's from and, if you'd like two voices taking turns, choose Duet. The gift message has room for every name, grandparents included.

Can it be sung in Spanish for the grandparents?

Yes: for the song language, choose Spanish (or Portuguese, or Italian). The two sample songs on this page are in English because the people who ordered them wanted them that way.

Can I change it before I pay?

Yes, for a limited number of rounds: change the lyrics, genre or mood and you get two new versions, and the app shows how many rounds you have left. After payment the song can't be changed and, except in the cases covered by our refund policy, it isn't refundable.
